Extra Steps to Shower Safety, in addition to the Shower Chair
There are other items and steps that you can take to make an enormous contribution to the safety of your shower in addition to your shower chair or shower bench. Bathing is one of the most dangerous activities of a person needing home health care. Anything you can do to alleviate some of that danger is highly recommended.
Some of the things we suggest are:
1) Add some grab bars to the wells of the shower or bath. Doing this allows the person bathing to gain stability and lessens the potential of a fall.
2) Put a shower chair safety block under the feet of the shower chair or shower bench that are in the water of the bath. This will help to stabilize the shower chair or shower bench and keep it from slipping.
3) Place a wooden or rubber floor mat outside of the shower or bath. Getting out of the shower while wet on a tile floor is clearly a situation that has risk of a fall.
4) Keep the bathing area as clean as possible. Slimy mildew can add to the danger of slipping.
5) Eliminate sharp corners or edges by covering them with foam rubber or even a cloth towel. If there is an accident a sharp corner will assuredly add to the problem.
